We're looking down from the treetops at the Georgian Bluffs community and thinking about what makes it such a great place to live, work, and play, while keeping an eye on the horizon and planning what we want our community to look like over the next 25 years.

What is a Strategic Plan?

A strategic plan is a roadmap that guides the Township's decisions and actions over the years to come. It outlines our goals, priorities, and strategies for tackling challenges and seizing opportunities. By setting a clear direction, strategic plans ensure our efforts are focused and aligned toward achieving our long-term vision.

    The Township of Georgian Bluffs has unveiled a draft strategic plan. View from the Top: Strategic Plan 2025-2030 was created with insights from residents, Council members, and local stakeholders, and aims to capture the heart and future of Georgian Bluffs, guided by a new vision of “Deeply Rooted, Sustainably Growing.” The plan seeks to support sustainable investment, inclusivity, and environmental stewardship, and honour the history of Georgian Bluffs’ while preparing for a thriving future.

    “We are committed to building a strong municipality that sets clear expectations and seeks to exceed them,” said Mayor Sue Carleton. “The people that call Georgian Bluffs home are what set us apart. View from the Top is your strategic plan, and our commitment to residents, visitors, businesses, and communities who call Georgian Bluffs home.”

    The draft plan incorporates a new brand and vision, articulates core values, and emphasizes four pillars that matter most to the community:

    • Enhancing Service Delivery: Excellence in Every Interaction
    • Empowering Communities: Creating Social and Economic Opportunity
    • Enhancing Environment & Infrastructure: Building for Today and Tomorrow
    • Workforce Development: Investing in People

    Each pillar, shaped by the community’s voices, is designed to enrich community life today while securing a prosperous tomorrow.

    This timeline outlines the strategic planning process, culminating in the development of Vision 2050 and the Strategic Plan. By engaging in a collaborative and transparent manner, we aim to harness the collective wisdom of our community members, stakeholders, and Council to chart a course that reflects our shared values and aspirations. Together, we will navigate through the steps outlined in this timeline, ensuring that our efforts are focused, purposeful, and driven by the vision of creating a vibrant and resilient future for Georgian Bluffs.

    Timeline:

    1. Strategic Session with Council: Held April 12, 2024. Watch Part 1, and Part 2

    2. Consultation Launch: Late May, 2024

    3. One-on-One Discussions with Council Members: To be completed in May, 2024.

    4. Survey: From late May until the end of June 2024, both online and randomly selected telephone opportunities will be available.

    5. Community Workshops: In-person drop-in workshops will be held at the Shallow Lake Community Centre (May 29, 2024), the Derby Community Centre (June 17, 2024), and the Kemble Arena (June 26, 2024) from 4-6 p.m.

    6. Connect and Collaborate: This in-person collaboration day will be held on June 18, 2024, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Grey Roots Museum. It will feature the Strategic Plan and other community projects that the Township is seeking feedback on.

    7. Virtual Workshop: A virtual Community Workshop will take place on June 25, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. Please register here.

    8. Draft Plan and Feedback Period: Scheduled to be presented to Council in late summer.

    9. Finalization of Vision 2050 and Strategic Plan: Targeted for early fall of 2024.

    10. Preparation of Business Plan for Budget 2025: To be completed in conjunction with the strategic plan and finalized for the 2025 Budget.

    This process aims to provide many different opportunities to effectively engage stakeholders, gather diverse perspectives, and ensure that the resulting Vision 2050 and Strategic Plan accurately reflect the aspirations and priorities of the Georgian Bluffs community.

    The 2020-2024 Strategic Plan for the Township of Georgian Bluffs was driven by a vision, mission, and set of values aimed at enhancing the quality of life and fostering economic and social opportunities for the community.

    Vision: Quality of life through opportunity, beauty, and adventure.

    Mission: Creating economic and social opportunities through responsible leadership, innovation, and partnership.

    Corporate Values: People, Trust, Respect, Excellence, Integrity, Accountability, Stewardship.

    Strategic Goals:

    1. Improve Communication, Collaboration, and Transparency
    2. Foster Economic Growth
    3. Demonstrate and Enhance Environmental Stewardship
    4. Increase Available Community, Recreational, and Social Opportunities
    5. Deliver Effective and Cost-Efficient Services

    Objectives: Each goal was supported by specific objectives aimed at achieving the broader strategic goals.

    Strategic Plan Outcome

    Over the course of the 2020-2024 strategic plan, the Township of Georgian Bluffs made strides in advancing its vision of fostering economic prosperity, enhancing environmental stewardship, and improving community well-being. Through targeted initiatives and collaborative efforts, the township achieved accomplishments in areas such as communication and collaboration, economic growth, environmental sustainability, community development, and effective service delivery. Despite facing challenges, Georgian Bluffs also found opportunities for growth and innovation, laying the groundwork for a more resilient and vibrant community.

    Accomplishments

    1. Communication & Transparency: Township communications and transparency have improved. The website and social media use has dramatically increased, and genuine community engagement practices are being adopted.

    2. Planning: A comprehensive review of the Township's Official Plan is well underway and expected to conclude in 2024, with a Zoning Bylaw update to follow.

    3. Environmental: Provincial recycling strategies are being implemented locally, and water supplies have been maintained.

    4. Community Services: Likely seeing the greatest progress against the established targets, the Community Safety and Wellbeing Plan and the Recreation and Trails Master Plan were completed, improvements were made to several recreational (outdoor) spaces, and accessibility enhancements were made.

    5. Cost effective services: Engagement was increased with streaming and agenda improvements, compensation reviews were undertaken and Fire Service agreements renewed.

    Challenges

    Despite these successes, the township faced challenges in some areas. A communications strategy was delayed, environmental concerns surrounding the Biodigester continued, and unanticipated projects like Short-Term Accommodations and the Kemble Arena redevelopment drew resources. The absence of SMART criteria in the existing Strategic Plan, coupled with the upheavals brought by COVID-19 and provincial legislative changes, underscored the need for adaptive planning and ongoing evaluation of objectives.
